We are the electricity Distribution Network Operator (DNO) responsible for delivering power to over 3.8 million homes and businesses across central southern England and the north of Scotland. We serve some of the most diverse and unique geographies across the UK, and keep customers and communities connected whilst developing the flexible electricity network vital to achieving net zero.

Our skilled teams are based right across the regions we serve, from the bustle of West London to the smallest villages in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Explore Smart Meter LV Feeder data:  

1. Start with the lookup tool to identify your LV Feeder Dataset ID. You can enter your postcode to find the associated Dataset ID.  
2. Switch to the second tab where you can preview the actual data. You can use filtering functionality to get only a subset of the larger data table. Use your Dataset ID number here.  
3. Explore the data relevant to your LV Feeder Dataset. You can also download it to conduct further analysis in your own tool. 
 
4. If the data you are looking for is older than 365 days, you can browse raw data files available in the third tab. All data is stored as flat files and organized by date so that you can find and download specific data files in CSV format.

Smart Meter LV Feeder Data

A 12-digit network reference number uniquely identifying the electricity route from the primary substation to each property. The format: 4 digits (Primary Substation) + 3 digits (High Voltage Substation) + 3 digits (Secondary Substation) + 2 digits (Low Voltage Feeder).

The full name of the Distribution Network Operator (DNO).

dno_name

DNO Name

The shorthand or abbreviated name of the DNO.

dno_alias

DNO Alias

The unique identifier of the secondary substation, extracted from the third section (3 digits) of the dataset_id.

secondary_substation_id

Secondary Substation ID

The given name of the secondary substation, typically referring to a road or landmark nearby.

secondary_substation_name

Secondary Substation Name

The unique identifier of the low voltage (LV) feeder, extracted from the last two digits of the dataset_id.

lv_feeder_id

LV Feeder ID

The given name of the LV feeder, typically referring to a nearby road or landmark.

lv_feeder_name

LV Feeder Name

The latitude and longitude coordinates of the secondary substation (may be omitted for security reasons).

substation_geo_location

Substation Geo Location

Total number of smart meters from which data was collected for the given row. This number may fluctuate based on available data.

aggregated_device_count_active

Aggregated Device Count Active

Total watt-hours (Wh) consumed, summed from individual smart meters via the primary measuring element of the electricity meter.

primary_consumption_active_import

Primary Consumption Active Import

Total watt-hours (Wh) consumed, summed from individual smart meters via the secondary measuring element (if present).

secondary_consumption_active_import

Secondary Consumption Active Import

The total watt-hours (Wh) consumed across all included smart meters.

The total reactive energy (Wh) imported, summed from all individual smart meter readings.

The timestamp marking the end of the half-hour period during which consumption was measured, in UTC time format (ISO 8601).

The 'Orkney Smart Meter Volumes' data set has been created by cross referencing the number of smart meter installs as of 26.02.2025 at a dataset_id level via the total_mpan_count column in the open data portal, Smart Meter LV Feeder Data 'LOOKUP' tab and cross referencing this with the associated postcode data available through the full export file available via the open data portal Smart Meter LV Feeder Data page. The list of Orkney postcodes have been taken from doogal.co.uk

The data sharing team have facilitated a data surgery with the Smart Meter Data that is available on SSEN Distributions Data Portal. This session provided all of our users to have an opportunity to engage with our internal teams. This session had a focus on bringing awareness to the Smart Meter Data and performing a deep dive into this data with clarity on future enhancements. Smart Meter Data Surgery Slides

Due to the number of smart meters available on some of our LV Feeders (Dataset_ID’s) there isn’t any available data. This is due to needing 5 or more smart meters to send data before we can aggregate. On the two tabs held within the worksheet, the first tab shows the dataet_id’s and the number of customers and the number of smart meters, this also then shows the earliest date we have data via the Open Data Portal. We only have Dataset_ID: 030500122503 which has returned data within the period requested and this has been added onto the second tab.

 As more smart meters are installed the more data will start to become available, however it is important to note that any dataset_ID’s with under 5 customers will not have any data collected as it would require 5 customers with smart meters to aggregate the data together.
